Dexlansoprazole is a unique proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which is orally active and tailored to inhibit the gastric enzyme pantropase, responsible for the final step of gastric acid production. PPIs generally have a shorter duration of effect than Dexlansoprazole, which lasts for up to 72 hours, making it longer lasting than the rest. Due to its effective absorption in the stomach and reduced risk of interference with gastric acid suppression, it has a higher affinity to its target, enabling a longer effect on the enzyme it inhibits. This proton pump inhibitor is particularly special as it can be given as an orally administered 60-mg dose once every two days, resulting in improved patient adherence and outcomes. It is effective in treating stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal conditions, helping to relieve symptoms and heal the damage caused by these conditions.
