Atenolol is a unique selective beta-1 receptor blocker, prescribed to treat hypertension, and in combination with other antihypertensive agents to treat myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and migraine. By blocking the beta-1 adrenoreceptor, atenolol has the effect of reducing systemic vascular resistance, total peripheral resistance, and blood pressure, while reducing the demand for oxygen in the heart, without affecting the rate or intensity of ventricular contractions.
